2013 will bring new challenges and new opportunities that I am excited about. I have some great work projects lined up and some even better climbing projects on my radar.
Near the end of the climbing season in Squamish my friend Sonnie Trotter showed me his new, extremely overhanging route called The Battle of Evermore, 5.14. This is one of the best looking sport climbs I have seen in Squamish! It really has it all and climbs very well. I have had a few goes on it and it has gone really well. I am hoping that my winter power endurance gym training at the Squamish Bouldering Coop will pay off and that I will send it early in the spring.
Next on the list is a route that I thought I would never try. It is called Cobra Crack, 5.14 and is considered one of the hardest crack climbs in the world. Sonnie Trotter did the first ascent back in 2006. Since then there have been 7 successful ascents by Nico Favresse, Ethan Pringle, Matt Segal, Will Stanhope, Yuji Hirayama, and Alex Honnald. If you know anything about climbing, these are some of the biggest names.
For me to walk up and start working such a historic and physically demanding route that only the best in the world have been able to complete is actually very intimidating. I have been on the route 3 days, about 7 tries and I remember my first go. I could not do the first move! I was thinking to myself, how is the crux going to feel if the easy part is so hard!
Well by my last few tries before the fall rains set in I was actually linking the whole lower section to just below the crux! It is so physical and extremely painful. The line itself is so amazing; the rock is perfect and the setting is tranquil. Who knows it might go next summer or in a couple of years or maybe never but I am going to devote some serious effort and give it my all!
2013 I am ready!
